New signing fit and available for Chesterfield as transfer deadline looms

New signing Louie Marsh will be in the frame for selection when Chesterfield host Gillingham tonight.

The striker is fit and available after signing in on a season-long loan from Sheffield United as Paul Cook and his team look to put a painful late defeat at Rotherham United on Saturday behind them.

Chesterfield made a move for the 22-year-old within 24 hours of the 2-1 loss.

“I heard about the interest on Sunday and as soon as I heard about it, I just wanted it to be done as soon as possible,” said Marsh.

“The gaffer showed me where he wants me to play. I know it’s a really competitive team with a lot of good players and I’m really looking forward to going straight into it and hopefully playing my first game (against Gillingham).”

With the summer transfer deadline arriving at 11pm tonight, Cook had declined to speak about possible comings and goings in his interviews after Saturday’s match.

Supporters will watch the countdown with interest considering management have spoken of the possibility of players moving out, not least striker Will Grigg.

First priority is taking three points from the first midweek game of the season against a Gillingham side still hunting a first win in League Two this term under Gareth Ainsworth.

“It is under the lights and Gillingham are always tough games,” said assistant manager Danny Webb.

“We all want to sort of turn the tables on the weekend. It is important that you do reflect but then you have to put Rotherham to bed and look forward or else you carry on moping. You go and win and the week looks a lot brighter.”

Ruel Sotiriou is an injury doubt while medical staff have been monitoring Lee Bonis, who came off with a head cut at the weekend.

New arrival Marsh is a fresh option up front. A product of the Blades’ academy, he already has decent experience from loan stints at Doncaster, Fleetwood and most recently Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.

Webb added: “Louie is a talented young player who is coming into the building with a real desire to have a successful season. He has a solid level of experience for a player of his age and adds to our attacking threat.

“We’re looking forward to getting him involved as soon as possible.”
