Morsy wants to stay at Wigan as rumours link ex Spireite with Sheffield United move

Despite rumours linking himw ith a move to Sheffield United, ex Spireite Sam Morsy wants to remain in the Championship with Wigan Athletic.

The 24-year-old former Chesterfield captain was sold to the Latics in January and a source close to the player said reports of a possible move to Bramall Lane had come as a surprise: “I don’t think there’s any substance in it, he played 90 minutes for Wigan the other day, he’s very much in their plans.

“He has no desire to leave and the club have said they want him in the Championship.

“That was his ambition, to play in the Championship, and when he was at Chesterfield there was interest from MK Dons and Preston but he saw Wigan as a really good option to go up and maintain that status.”

Last night Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder refused to comment on speculation about the former Port Vale player, but did confirm he was considering bolstering his midfield options.

But with Wigan thought to be interested in Blades forward Che Adams, Morsy might be seen as an added incentive for United to sell their highly rated youngster.

Morsy made 117 appearances as a Spireite and captained them to the League One play-offs in 2014/15.

In January he agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with Wigan who are thought to have paid around £250k.
