Matlock Town boss gives his take on departure of Chib Chilaka
Matlock manager Paul Phillips says striker Chib Chilaka’s departure from the Proctor Cars Stadium is more down to circumstances than anything else.
The 34 years old Nigerian striker who scored five times in Matlock’s 7-1 Derbyshire Senior Cup victory at Borrowash Victoria last November, had been with Matlock for a little over a year and was firmly in Phillips’ plans during the summer.
“He was one of the main lads that I wanted to keep for he did tremendously well when he played last season,” Phillips explained.
“But Chib’s personal and family commitments, combined with the Coronavirus outbreak saw him fall behind the rest of the lads in terms of fitness. Had things gone as we both wished, he would have been fighting for his place with the other lads.
"He’s a terrific lad and I’m sure he’ll do very well with Belper. He leaves with all of our best wishes.”
Chilaka had spent time at East Midlands League Clipstone, managed by former Matlock boss Dave Hoole, in a bid to attain full match fitness.
