Mansfield Town legend could join James Rowe in Chesterfield dugout if Spireites move is confirmed

James Rowe is likely to bring his former assistant with him to Chesterfield if he is confirmed as the new Spireites boss.

George Foster, 64, who won promotion as a player and a manager at Mansfield, was Rowe’s assistant at Gloucester City from December 2019 onwards.

We understand that Foster, who had a spell at Chesterfield as the club’s community officer in the 1990s, is likely to link up again with Rowe if he does take charge of Town.

Rowe, 37, held talks with Chesterfield on Monday and left Gloucester City on Tuesday.

He is yet to be appointed Blues manager and the process is ongoing.

Town are next in action away at fellow strugglers Weymouth on Saturday.

The experienced Foster has an impressive CV, including being Swansea City’s European scout when they were in the Premier League. He has also had scouting roles at Wolves, Coventry City, Hull City, Port Vale, Derby County and Middlesbrough.

The former centre-half made more than 600 appearances across a 19-year career at Plymouth Argyle, Derby and Mansfield.

Speaking about being back in coaching ealier this year in March, Foster said: “I had been in recruitment for quite a while and you forget that buzz when you win a football match. It's great to be sat on the bench and being around the players.”

On working with Rowe, he added: “He is a good coach and knows what he wants. He wanted me to come down with the experience I have.

“He makes the decisions and does most of the training. I am just there for another opinion.”
