Lytham goal seals a fifth straight win

A single goal from Callum Lytham at Askern FC was enough for Clay Cross Town to secure their fifth consecutive victory and consolidate their top three position in the Central Midlands League North Division.

It may have been a different story though had either side converted their early chances, but the woodwork and good saves from both keepers kept it all even.

The goal that finally won the game was carved out by the man of the match, Callum Lytham, on 59 minutes.

It came after he’d eluded the resilient home defence and was then confronted by just the keeper, Tony Sykes, who he deftly side-stepped and slotted the ball past from an acute angle.

Although it had been an evenly-contested game, the home side pressed in the latter stages for the equaliser which saw keeper Sykes getting actively involved in an attacking role.

However, the Millers dealt with every effort effectively and returned home with the valuable three points to move them to within three points of second placed Appleby Frodingham after ten games.

Both Appleby and FC Bolsover were not in action at the weekend. Bolsover remain top of th e table by a single point, but have played two games more than their rivals.
