Such is their potential Pemberton believes they could attract interest from elsewhere if they keep developing.

“They (Sharman and Rawson) need to be good players because there is a little bit more pressure on them because they want to play for the club they have supported all their lives and what I want them to do is go in there and stay there and hopefully the more experience they get the more value is added to them,” Pemberton said.

“I see them as the backbone of what we are trying to do, which is produce a team which can play together for the next three or four years and, certainly them two, if they keep progressing, we might not be able to keep hold of them. But if we can and we start progressing as a team and a club they could be here for the next five years.”

Rawson’s super-sub appearance grabbed the headlines as his two late strikes in six minutes sealed a first win of the season for Town.

Pemberton said he has been an 'admirer’ of the youngster since working with him in the academy and wanted to give him an opportunity after feeling he had been overlooked in the past.

“He only needed a goal and he has tried like a bear to get a goal,” the Blues boss added.

“He has got a couple of goals which is brilliant but he is a boy learning his trade so I have a vision for him long-term and we have just got to make sure his progression is good and he keeps improving because that is the main thing.

“I know what he is capable of but I also know he can be be very hit and miss at this moment in time so what we don’t want to do is get him in a position where he starts to lose confidence and that is the important bit for me.”
