'It would have been a travesty' - John Dungworth delighted with 'great team performance' as Chesterfield beat Stockport County on penalties in FA Cup

Liam Hogan gave the hosts the lead just before the hour-mark when Town goalkeeper Kyle Letheren failed to properly punch the ball clear from a corner.

Just moments before that Chesterfield had a strong shout for a penalty refused by referee Peter Gibbons when Milan Butterfield was tripped in the box.

But with four minutes to go Butterfield slammed the ball home from close-range for his first Blues goal.

Letheren redeemed himself for his earlier error when he kept out Stockport’s first penalty in the shootout from John Rooney. Josef Yarney saw his spot-kick saved by Ben Hinchliffe but Town edged through 7-6 when Butterfield rolled in the winner after Sam Minihan blazed one over the bar.

"I thought we played really well and the organisation was really good,” Dungworth said.

"If we had not got something out of the game it would have been a travesty.

“I thought everybody played their part, it was a great team performance and tactically the gaffer got it spot on.

“Everybody has worked really hard and got their just rewards with the penalties.

“Everybody stuck to their tasks well, we looked really strong at the back and the three lads up front all looked a threat.

“Today is a great result and we are in the next round of the FA Cup so everybody is buzzing at the moment.”

On Stockport’s opener, Dungworth had some sympathy for Letheren given the amount of bodies in the box and the wet conditions.

“He has been put under a lot of pressure, we feel, by players obstructing him at corners,” Town’s assistant said. “He doesn’t get any protection from referees so I feel sorry for him in that respect.”

Butterfield put in his best performance in a Chesterfield shirt since signing from Kidderminster Harriers in the summer and was probably man of the match.

“Milan has been doing really well in training and has earnt the right to start the game today,” Dungworth said.

On Butterfield’s strong penalty shout, Dungworth added: “We were certain it was a penalty, but there were a lot of decisions that did not go for us at certain times.”
