Sheridan has been out of a job since he was sacked by Chesterfield with the club third bottom of the National League and five points from safety.
In the previous campaign he rescued Town from relegation and hopes were high for a successful season this year but it turned out to be a major disappointment.

Waterford were sixth in the table after four games before the season was halted because of the pandemic but it is due to get underway again at the end of this month.
Chairman, Lee Power, added: “I’ve known John for over 20 years and am delighted that he has agreed to help me and the club out. To have someone with John’s calibre managing the club is fantastic for the supporters and the city and will also put to bed a number of silly rumours that have surrounded my families commitments and ownership of the club.”
