“The break came at the right time for us,” he said. “But we want to play in a season that is going to finish, we want to kick on and not play in a season that has one game every 15 weeks.

“Players are playing with injuries and we cannot ask any more of them.

“I thought we managed the game well and were worthy winners.

“Our fitness was good and I was really impressed seeing as we had not played in so long.

“Belper played over the break and we hadn’t, but the players just wanted to get the points and I think adrenaline saw them through. It was a big three points and just what we needed.”

Assistant manager Danny Allsopp also hailed the desire of the players to get the job done.

“The lads have worked hard in training and, although a few were flagging at certain points, adrenalin drove them through and we looked pretty fit.

“It was a tough game on a heavy pitch and I thought our midfield looked really good at times.

“We are really pleased with the players.”
