AFC Fylde boss Dave Challinor admits he would have liked to have kept Laurence Maguire after a '˜really successful' loan spell.

The young Chesterfield defender is back at the Proact having been recalled by Gary Caldwell in the wake of Ian Evatt’s knee injury.

He helped the National League North leaders to a win and three draws and earned a glowing review from Challinor.

“He did well,” said ex Bury defender Challinor.

“I think the game at Harrogate, his first game, was a bit of an eye opener, it was very direct.

“Ultimately he’s more of a footballer, he wants to get the ball down and that suits the way we try and play.

“There aren’t that many sides in our division who play like that so you’ve got to deal with the direct aspect first before you stamp your own style on it.

“But he coped with it fine.”

Loan spells in non-league can often be a shock to the system, but 20-year-old Maguire appeared to take it in his stride.

Challinor said: “It was a makeshift back four, but he dealt with it and fitted in with the group really well.

“It was a really successful loan spell.

“He’s one that has been really good to have in, loans can be up and down, but I’ve not got a bad word to say about him.

“He helped us.

“We would have liked to have kept him, from a point of view of continuity with a back four that kept a clean sheet in midweek.

“He was getting more and more comfortable and getting used to what we do, the way we want to play.”
