Four big talking points from Chesterfield's win against Weymouth in James Rowe's first match as Spireites boss

Goals from debutant Akwasi Asante and Tom Denton got new Chesterfield manager James Rowe off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory at Weymouth. Here are Liam Norcliffe’s four talking points from the game:

The high press

We got our first glimpse of what a Chesterfield side will look like under Rowe and it was clear that pressing from the front is going to be a big part of how he wants to play. Tom Denton, Akwasi Asante and Joe Rowley pressed and hassled Weymouth’s defence in the first 35 minutes and it allowed Town to totally dominate large periods of the game.

Ace Asante

The new signing from Gloucester City scored on his debut to level the score in first half stoppage time with a swivel and finish in the box after Denton headed the ball into his path. He could have had a hat-trick before that but was denied by Terras goalkeeper Gerard Benfield. He could have bagged four overall before he was subbed off just after the hour. As well as his goal, his link-up play with Denton was impressive considering it was their first outing together. Promising signs.

A tweak in defence

Moving captain Will Evans to the right of the back three allowed him to step out with the ball which resulted in Chesterfield’s winner. Rowe sees that as Evans’ best position so we can expect him to continue in that role. By shifting Evans across one, Haydn Hollis came in for just his second start of the season and he was excellent. With no fans inside the Bob Lucas Stadium, you could hear Hollis organising the defence and everyone in front of him and Rowe praised him for it after the game.

Bouncebackability

It was nice to see Chesterfield come from a goal down to win after it being the other way round so many times this season. Weymouth took the lead against the run of play through Sean Shield’s curling strike from the edge of the box. In his post-match interview Rowe said he noticed Town’s frailties after that as the hosts pressed for a second. But Asante’s goal meant they went in level at the break and the Blues continued their dominance in the second half and got a deserved win.
