Four big talking points as Chesterfield held to goalless draw against Aldershot Town

Chesterfield were held to a goalless draw against Aldershot Town in James Rowe’s first home match as Spireites manager on Tuesday night at the Technique Stadium. Here are Liam Norcliffe’s talking points from the game:

Missed chances

Chesterfield created enough chances to win three or four games but a lack of ruthlessness and some brilliant saves by Aldershot goalkeeper Brad James left the Spireites frustrated. The positive is that they are creating opportunities and they must have had at least 20 attempts in both of Rowe’s two matches in charge. Tuesday night was the first time Town have not scored this season in the league and it was also their first draw of the campaign.

Despite being disappointed not to have taken all three points against Aldershot I think most Spireites fans will be encouraged by what they have seen so far under Rowe. In both games Chesterfield have played at a high intensity, been on the front foot and have peppered the opposition goal. In his post-match interview Rowe said that there are some ‘pleasing signs’ and he was happy that they have had a ‘right go’.

Before kick-off Chesterfield announced the signings of midfielders Jak McCourt, 25 and Tom Whelan, 24, and both came off the bench in the second half. McCourt, who was a free agent, is well-known from his previous time at Town and he has joined on a month-to-month contract. He almost scored from distance with his first touch but was denied by the superb James. Whelan has signed from Weymouth for an undisclosed fee and Rowe said he ‘will be here next year’. The Blues boss said he wants to play three in midfield so he felt he needed more options. It is likely that some players will go out on loan in the next month with Rowe acknowledging they have a ‘big squad’.

Praise for the defence

Clean sheets do not appear something Rowe loses any sleep over but he was happy to record one here. Haydn Hollis has played both matches under Rowe and has been a rock and the new boss said his performances have rubbed off on Will Evans and Laurence Maguire.
