Former Chesterfield chairman returns as new vice president at Spireites

Warner first joined the board in 1993 and was appointed chairman in November 2016.

He played an instrumental part in helping to save club from going bust in 2001, paying off a six-figure loan following Darren Brown’s ill-fated tenure.

Warner wrote-off a ‘substantial’ sum owed to him to allow the community trust to complete a takeover of the club in August 2020 and also gave the trust 30,000 of his shares.

The life-long fan, who has been in attendance at some games since the takeover, previously told the DT that relegation from the Football League will ‘haunt him forever.’

After accepting the honorary position, Warner said: “I am delighted to have been handed the role of vice president and I will do my very best to be a good ambassador for the club.

“I joined the board in 1993 so my association with Chesterfield spans more than 25 years and I have a deep affection for the club.”

Chairman Mike Goodwin said that he was ‘very pleased’ that Warner had accepted the club’s invitation to become vice president.

“Mike was offered the role in recognition of his vital contribution to the running of the club over many years,” Goodwin added.

“This includes being instrumental in helping save the club from going out of business in 2001, when he paid-off a six-figure loan following the Darren Brown debacle.

“It should also be noted that without Mike’s willingness to write-off a substantial sum owed to him, the community trust’s takeover of the club would not have been possible.”
