It is understood Caldwell did not begin the interview stage as a front runner for the manager’s job.

The 36-year-old faces the biggest task to convince the Rovers board that he is the right man to succeed Darren Ferguson but it was felt there was enough potential from his application to provide him the opportunity to do so.

Caldwell was sacked as manager of Chesterfield last September after the Spireites picked up only one win in their first ten matches following relegation to League Two, which he also oversaw.

The former Celtic defender earned promotion to the Championship with Wigan Athletic in his first management job but a run of two wins from 14 games at the start of the following season saw him sacked.

He confirmed in February that he had applied to be manager of Scotland but was ultimately overlooked for Alex McLeish.

The Rovers board hope to reach an agreement on their ideal candidate by the end of Monday in order to begin negotiating terms with the new manager on Tuesday.
