Fans' boos did my job today - Danny Wilson

Wilson’s men trudged off to a chorus of discontent at the break, 1-0 down and without a shot on target.

The manager was every bit as frustrated as those in the stands, but insisted there was no hairdryer treatment.

“I don’t get angry, it’s frustration,” he said of his emotions at half-time.

“When you see how the boys can play, and then they serve up that in 45 minutes, that’s the disappointing part of it. They’re better than they showed first half.

“I quite enjoyed the booing, it gave them a kick up the arse, I thought it was brilliant because I didn’t have to say a great deal - I did, but I didn’t have to really.

“That said everything. Just a little awakening for them.”

“The first 45 was poor. Really poor. We had one deflected shot from Lee and were massively second best in everything we did, and that can’t happen.

“Particularly in a game with the consequences we could have had today, if we had lost.

“We had to show more of a passion and more of a dynamic in our play.”

Looking for a more dynamic performance, Wilson sent on Gboly Ariyibi and Jay O’Shea for the second half, and the duo put in efforts that competed fiercely for the Man of the Match award.

Ariyibi’s cross set up the equaliser, O’Shea’s free-kick assisted the second, Ariyibi scored the third and O’Shea the fourth.

“You can’t take anything away from that second half, that was a great, great 45 minutes,” said Wilson.

“We showed the character I knew we had within the team.

“In the second half with the changes, we added a bit more pace and guile with Jay O’Shea and Gboly Ariyibi and we started so well, we were on the front foot within seconds.

“Scoring when we did gave us a great belief that with all the time left, we could score more.

“That first turn of pace from Gboly shocked the right-back, who had a very good game first half, he was dominating lots of play. They couldn’t cope with him (Gboly).

“That’s what they’re there for. You don’t have subs on the bench not to make a difference, and that’s what they’ve done. Job well done.”

The Chesterfield team sheet was without the names Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Dion Donohue and Liam O’Neil.

Explaining the absences, Wilson said: “”Ebanks-Blake has been left out of the squad, for no reason at all, just to give him a break.

“Sylvan will be back in on Monday and we’ll take it from there, but he’s just been given a weekend away from the squad.

“Dion still has a back spasm problem. He trained yesterday but didn’t train particularly well.

“Liam got injured on Thursday, a real quirk, he went to stop a cross and the ball hit him on the end of the toe and damaged his ankle. He’s been on crutches for a couple of days.”
