Dimaio could long be remembered if he listens, says fellow local lad

If Connor Dimaio listens to the voices of experience around him at the Proact, he could be remembered by fans long after his career.

The Chesterfield lad joined his hometown club last season from Sheffield United and impressed boss Danny Wilson sufficiently to earn a two year deal.

Another local boy who went on to become a fan favourite says Dimaio has the potential to do the same.

Bob Newton made just 78 Football League appearances for the Spireites, but scored 29 goals and will be remembered as a striker who helped the club win the 1984/95 Fourth Division title.

If Dimaio wants to achieve legendary status among the fans, he’ll do well to pay attention when some of the wise heads are offering advice.

Newton said: “Let’s hope he’s remembered.

“Some are remembered and some are forgotten.

“When you play football it’s nice to be remembered because it means you’ve done something for the fans, the people that matter.

“The only man who can make that happen is Connor, by listening to people.

“He’s got loads of experience down there, with Danny, Morgs (assistant manager Chris Morgan) and Ritchie Humphries, minds full of football knowledge.

“If he listens to them and experienced players like Ian Evatt, he could go on to be remembered for a long time.”

The former Hartlepool and Port Vale man has been impressed with Dimaio’s character off the pitch.

“He’s a lovely lad, he’s got a lot of potential,” he said.

“Connor could be quality, he’s got the right attitude.

“I’ve presented him with a couple of Man of the Match awards down there and he seems a level headed lad.”

Newton still cherishes his memories of starring at Saltergate and says Dimaio should enjoy every minute.

“To play for your local team, for me, is the best thing you can do in football apart from play for England.

“Pulling on that Spireites shirt, in front of your mates and mum and dad, the people who know you and know how hard you’ve worked, it’s a fantastic feeling.

“It should be a fantastic feeling wherever you play, in my era that’s how it was.

“I did move a lot in my career but the thing is, playing for Chesterfield was brilliant and the fans still remember me now.

“I love the town.”
