Derby County boss Steve McClaren expecting tough FA Cup test against Chesterfield

The Rams were beaten at the death by Nottingham Forest last weekend and are aiming to bounce back by sealing their passage in to the FA Cup fifth round.

Derby battled past Conference minnows Southport in the third round after a Chris Martin injury-time penalty secured a 1-0 win.

And McClaren is expecting things to be just as tough against Paul Cook’s promotion-chasing Spireites.

“I saw Chesterfield in the last round against Scunthorpe and was very impressed by them,” said McClaren.

“They have got good players in the team and have an excellent attitude and workrate.

“They play good passing football and play the game in the right way. Eoin Doyle is attracting the interest and is doing very well, but the injury to Gary Roberts will be a big blow to them.

“Paul Cook is doing a great job at Chesterfield. They are doing well in League One and we are in for a tough test.

“This is a cup game with a bit more added spice, especially for the Chesterfield fans. They are going to be backed by 5,500 fans so there will be a great atmosphere, all the makings of a classic are there.

“No cup game is easy as the last round prooved against Southport and it is important that we approach the game in a professional way, have patience and have the correct attitude.”

And, although promotion to the Premier League remains the key objective, McClaren says the FA Cup is still important to his side.

“The cups can help you keep up momentum and get wins that help to build confidence,” he said.

“It also allows you to give games to squad players, though I want to pick a strong team for this game.

“We have got to bounce back from the Forest defeat and that is what we are aiming to do on Saturday.

“Cups are important to us and we want to go as far as possible, The cups can be magical if you win it or go on a long run.”

Derby could give first starts to new signings Stephen Warnock and Raul Albentosa, subject to international clearance.
