The influential forward has been struggling with a heel problem of late but has continued to play through the pain barrier.

He set up Marc Richards for the opening goal against Rochdale before netting the equaliser in a battling second half at Spotland.

Roberts was replaced by Tendayi Darikwa with 10 minutes remaining and has not trained all week.

The extent of his injury remains unclear and Spireites boss Paul Cook said it was a worrying situation.

He said: “We want to make sure he’s 100 per cent fit when he goes on the pitch so he can do what we all know he’s good at.”

Club captain Ian Evatt came through 70 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game with Grimsby Town without any reaction in his knee.

He is expected to feature again on Tuesday against a Sheffield Wednesday X1.

Eoin Doyle bagged a hat-trick against the Mariners in a 5-1 win for Chesterfield as he continues to make a claim for a starting place.

Cook said he has thought about partnering him alongside Richards in attack.

He said: “We have the option to play them both. We’ve got two hot strikers.

“At the moment I feel our formation does work well and we do create chances. Keeping the players happy off the pitch is part of my job.”
