Colts back towinning ways

Wirksworth Colts 5,

Mickleover All-Stars 0

Wirksworth Colts returned to winning ways in the Derby City League Saturday Under-14 Division Two after a spell of close-run setbacks and postponements, with their most convincing performance of the season.

Scott Taylor’s ingenuity opened up the Mickloever All-Stars defence early in the first half as he jinked his way to the byline down the left and crossed to the far post where Henry Brownsey came tanking in to head goalwards, Kyle Hadfield smashing the ball over the line to make sure.

With Ben Cartwright sweeping up with characteristic timing and intelligence, Wirksworth braved Mickleover’s best spell before half-time, with Chris Vickers and Ash Smith outstanding in defence and Josh Middleton running non-stop in his commanding fashion in the centre of the field.

Wirksworth came out for the second half with greater vitality and Joe Potts’ pace and well-timed runs were rewarded when he dashed in on the diagonal to steer Connor Simms’ cross beyond the brave Mickleover goalkeeper.

With the frosty pitch thawing, Wirksworth started to play some lovely passing football, with Will Cummins taking up some superb positions, and Sam Paisley – man of the match for his positioning, touch and team sense – scored the third goal with a sweet left-footer from 20 yards.

Sam Nelson added tenacity in midfield and when Taylor was brought down 20 yards from goal, Simms stepped up to drill in the free-kick, right into the bottom corner. In the final minute Brownsey tapped in at the far post as he anticipated Simms’ cross from the right wing.
