The Blues will be National League champions and promoted to the EFL if they beat the Latics and then Barnet drop points against Woking.

Asked about his emotions ahead of the match, Webb said: “There is obviously a little bit more excitement knowing that we could be neary there. But we only get there if we show the same habits that we have shown for most of the season. We just want to go to Oldham and make ourselves proud and the supporters proud and what will be will be.

"We have been in the driving seat for a long time and it is certainly the wrong time for us as staff and players to get carried away because we haven’t done that so far and it has paid dividends. We have got to go to Oldham as if we were one point ahead.

"There are not many tougher places to go than Boundary Park to try get over the line. We know we are in for a tough game. A win or point for them will probably get them back in the play-offs so there is loads on the line for them. We have obviously got our own reasons for wanting to go there and win. But if not we will keep ticking along.”

If Chesterfield do win at Oldham in the 12.30pm kick-off then all eyes will be on Barnet’s match at Woking at 3pm. So has Webb allowed himself to dream that Saturday might be the day?

He said: "You have your moments when you think about what could be and what a great feeling it would be around this town. But no, it is the nornal sort of arrangements with the pick-ups and the pre-match meal.”

Fan opinions are divided over whether they would rather win the title at an away game or at home but Webb is clear on what he prefers.

He told the DT: "I think if you ask anyone they would just rather win the league as soon as possible, however that comes. That is certainly the option I would take and us as staff and everyone at the football club.”

The reverse fixture had a controversial equaliser for Oldham which sparked a pitch invasion but Webb insists revenge is not their main focus.

"I wouldn’t say it is about getting back at them,” he explained. “I just see it as wanting to beat one of the biggest clubs in the league. They are an ex-Premier League club many moons ago. It is a big, famous football club, as are we. The crowd will be fantastic. It won’t feel like a National League game. The atmosphere and the volatile nature of the fixture I think will bring out a real buzz come kick-off. It will feel like a League One or League Two fixture. We were gutted to concede in the last-minute here, but if we can go and win there in the last-minute that would be fantastic.”

Oldham were expected to be challenging for top spot with Chesterfield but a slow start under David Unsworth cost him his job and now the task falls to Micky Mellon to get them in the play-offs.

Webb added: "They have got a lot of players. A lot of centre-forwards. They are a powerful team and a powerful club. They have had an up and down season, their supporters have not been happy with a lot of things during it. I think a lot of their supporters would say they have underperformed on a whole, but they have got some good players and on their day they can beat most teams.”
