The 25-year-old could sign for the Spireites today, we understand, and become James Rowe’s ninth new signing.
In a statement, Salford City said: “Midfielder Martin Smith has left the club by mutual consent.
“The 25-year-old arrived at the Peninsula Stadium in the summer of 2019 ahead of our debut campaign in the Football League.
“After starting the first couple of games and making a handful of further appearances over the next few weeks, he joined Chorley on loan in the National League. He made a further seven appearances this season, taking his club total to 12.
“We would like to thank Martin for his contribution, and wish him well for his future career.”
Smith’s previous clubs also include Coleraine and Kilmarnock, as well as loan spells at Gateshead, Carlisle United and Chorley after coming through the Sunderland academy.
