Chesterfield: New recruit's pride over new Spireites role

Manager Danny Wilson had hinted ahead of the Peterborough game that his new skipper would need to be “a player that is respected by everyone in the dressing room”.

Wilson informed midfielder Liddle “10 minutes after I arrived at the ground on Saturday,” that he would lead the team out.

Liddle said: “I’m delighted; the manager called me into his office and said he would like a different voice out there. I made sure that the lads were alright with that and I knew they would be so I thank them for that support.

“I am proud to be captain of this football club; it’s a role I have done before at Notts County and Bradford so I feel at home doing it.

“I came into the club and didn’t know any of the lads, but everyone has made me feel right at home; from the guys in the media department, to the kit man, the club’s staff and the players. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds and hopefully it can be a bright one.”

Following on from three consecutive defeats, Spireites’ next match is away at leaders Burton Albion on Friday night. Nigel Clough’s Brewers saw off Bradford City at the weekend, winning 3-1 at The Pirelli Stadium.

The last four fixtures between these sides have all ended in away victories so Chesterfield will hope that run will continue.

Wilson looks set to be without his first choice strike-force after Lee Novak (foot) and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (hamstring), who both picked up injuries at the weekend. Former Blade Jordan Slew, 23, released by Cambridge United as the transfer window closed, could be drafted in as cover whilst Spurs full-back Kyle Walker-Peters could be moving in on loan this week.
