The 24-year-old was sent off on 10 minutes for ‘serious foul play’ for a challenge on Callum Reynolds.

Spireites boss James Rowe confirmed they had appealed the decision.

"There is no intent at all,” Rowe said.

However, the appeal has been rejected and Whelan will now be suspended for the next three matches.

It means the midfielder will miss this Saturday’s FA Trophy clash against Aldershot and the league fixture between the same two teams three days later, as well as the home game against Eastleigh.

Had Chesterfield’s match against King’s Lynn Town on Tuesday night, which was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, gone ahead then Whelan would have been available for the game against Eastleigh.
