Chesterfield director praises Barnsley for sacking ex Spireites assistant over '˜bung' allegation

The Tykes today announced that they had terminated the contract of assistant head coach Wright with immediate effect over allegations in a national newspaper that he accepted a transfer ‘bung.’

Spireites company secretary Carson tweeted: “Excellent decision on Tommy Wright.”

A statement on the Championship club’s official website read: “Barnsley FC today terminated the contract of Assistant Head Coach Tommy Wright with immediate effect.

“A meeting between the Club and Mr Wright was held this morning attended by Club Chief Executive Linton Brown.

“After considering Mr Wright’s response to allegations in today’s Daily Telegraph about breaching FA rules over player transfers, Mr Wright was dismissed.

“The Club was unaware of such matters or involved in any wrongdoing. The Club will continue to fully investigate the issues at hand and will co-operate with the regulatory authorities as necessary.”

As part of a Daily Telegraph investigation, Wright has been accused of accepting £5,000 during a series of meetings with a fake Far East firm.

The coach allegedly agreed to help sign players part-owned by the firm and took a bundle of £20 notes in an envelope.

Wright, 50, was suspended immediately after the allegation came to light last night.

He followed John Sheridan to the Proact to serve as his assistant in June 2009 and was made caretaker manager following the sacking of Sheridan on 27th August 2012.
