Chesterfield boss Danny Wilson was delighted to see Connor Dimaio register his first ever professional goal last weekend - especially as it came straight off the training ground!

The Chesterfield-born former Sheffield United midfielder grabbed his side’s vital third goal against Crewe Alexandra after neat interplay with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

Wilson’s glee wasn’t solely about the scorer, though; the build-up play pleased him too. The manager said: “We’ve been working on that in the week, wanting Sylvan to stay in that central area and it was one of the first balls that went into his feet in that area.

“Thankfully it paid off for us, a little one-two and it’s a great goal.”

Whilst Dimaio, 20, took the fans’ man of the match award - and many of the headlines - another youngster also won praise from Wilson; debut making Declan John, borrowed from Cardiff City, grew into the game as it progressed.

Wilson said: “He got better as the game went on.

“I thought he was a little bit nervous at first, which was to be expected; it was his first game after only being here a couple of days or so.

“But he settled down and in the second half we saw some great thrusts forward from him. He’s a good attacking player and it looks like he’s going to be a good asset for us.”

Midfielder Ollie Banks also caught the eye with Gary Liddle suspended and Chris Herd injured early in the game.

Spireites are now preparing for the long and awkward trip to Gillingham. Justin Edinburgh’s side, one of the sections’ surprise packages, have hit a sticky spell with just one win and just three goals in the last four games.

League One’s top scorers lost 2-1 at struggling Oldham on Saturday and surrendered their top two spot. Only leaders Burton Albion have won at Priestfield this season.
