When asked about the pair, Rowe said: “Both will be signing.

“Melvin will come in and compete for that number one spot.

“He is a great character and has a great attitude in training.

“I have worked with Jim before.

“Jim is an interesting one because he has been involved in two play-offs campaigns at my previous club (Aldershot) with me.

“He has lost his way through injury unfortunately but he is still a good age.

“He needs to go out on loan and play games and then we will see the best out of him.

“He is going to go on loan to Tamworth and he is going to train here and then, at the right time, he will have an impact.”

Liam Mandeville opened the scoring against the Mariners in the first minute with a superb long-range strike and then grabbed his second from six-yards on the 20-minute mark.

Grimsby pulled a goal back through Erico Sousa’s deflected strike before half-time.

Gavin Gunning and Manny Oyeleke were both absent because they were carrying knocks, while Kabongo Tshimanga was not ‘risked.’

The win rounds off Chesterfield’s pre-season as they head to Aldershot Town next Saturday for the National League opener.

“I thought we were very good for half an hour,” Rowe said on the performance.

“They had a spell after their goal, which was against the run of play, to get it back to 2-1.

“I thought we could have got three or four in that first half an hour.

“They (Grimsby) grew into it, they changed their shape at half-time, I thought it was an even start to the second-half, we changed our shape and then got a foothold back into it.

“It was a topsy-turvy friendly, but I am delighted with most of the performance.

“We did not score enough early goals in the early massages last year in my tenure so we want to start faster and score more goals.”
