Brave Staveley give top dogs an early fright
Plucky Staveley Miners Welfare gave top-of-the-table AFC Mansfield an early fright before succumbing to a 4-0 defeat in the Premier Division of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League.
Brett Marshall’s side, desperately seeking the points that will stave off the threat of relegation, bravely took the game to AFC on the Mansfield outfit’s own patch.
Going into the game with a battle-plan, they attacked the Bulls and tried to break them down from the get-go. But for some lacklustre finishing, the Trojans could well have gone a couple of goals in front during the opening half-hour.
However, they were rocked by a quickfire double just before half-time from AFC’s talismanic striker Ollie Fearon, and leaked two more goals in the last ten minutes of the 90, scored by Connor Smythe and Lynton Karkach. Smythe’s was direct from a corner that slipped through goalkeeper Matthew Leese’s hands at the near post.
