Boss reassured '˜worried' Weir over armband decision

Weir, who appeared set to leave the Proact this summer, is Allen’s choice to skipper the new-look Spireites.

“When I said to him he might not be a regular starter, that was when he wasn’t overly happy with that situation,” said Allen.

“But in fitness testing results he’s come back top, he’s opinionated, he’s challenging, he has high standards on and off the field and I liked him.

“He’s come back with real vigour, determination and his attitude is what I want from everyone.”

Given the criticism Weir and the relegated Town squad received, it’s understandable that he would feel some apprehension when made captain.

But Allen tried to allay the 29-year-old’s fears.

“He was worried (about) the fans’ reaction” said Allen.

“The fans didn’t like anyone last season.

“I reassured him that it’s my judgement, my decision.

“He’s not a yes man, he’s challenging – not difficult – but challenging, he asks me questions regularly, he suggests things we need to do and we’ve done them.

“He’s very upset with what happened last season, very hurt and wants a chance to put it right.”
