Big talking points from Chesterfield's win against King's Lynn Town as Kabongo Tshimanga grabs double

Kabongo Tshimanga scored both goals to take his tally to three in as many games since signing for the Spireites.

JOB DONE

This was another solid and professional away performance in which the Blues were fairly in control for the most part but without dominating possession.

In the early stages the Linnets had a good chunk of the ball but it was mostly passes across their backline and Chesterfield worked like trojans to stop it becoming anything more meaningful.

Former Spireite Tyler Denton had Scott Loach backpeddling with an overhit looped cross which landed on the roof of the net before the visitors took the lead on 16 minutes.

Liam Mandeville was brought down in the area by Kyle Callan-McFadden and Tshimanga smashed his penalty straight down the middle.

George Carline made a crucial block to deny Lynn’s Munashe Sundire and then from the resulting corner Jak McCourt cleared Daniel Bowry’s header off the line before Chesterfield immediately countered and almost doubled their lead but Calvin Miller could not get the ball out of his feet and his shot was blocked.

Another chance arrived when after pinching possession about 25-yards out, Mandeville drove at the home defence alone when he could have slipped Tshimanga in.

But Tshimanga did not have to wait long to get his double as the Spireites scored within 60 seconds of the second-half when Carline headed Laurence Maguire’s diagonal pass to the back post for the striker to poke home.

That goal knocked the stuffing out of the Linnets and Carline almost grabbed a third but his header was tipped over by goalkeeper Paul Jones.

Chesterfield had a strong spell of domination and had Lynn pinned in their own half although Loach was forced into making a couple of saves to keep the clean sheet intact, one of which came about after his own mistake which he made up for.

Overall, the Spireites carried out their game plan successfully, never looked in danger of losing it and got the job done.

EFFICIENT

Manager James Rowe used the word ‘efficient’ in his post-match interview and that probably sums up Chesterfield’s start to the season.

This was the Blues’ third successive win, third straight clean sheet, third 2-0 victory on the bounce and goal number three for Tshimanga.

They are yet to hit some of the heights of last season in terms of free-flowing football but we are only just over one week into the new season and this was their second game in just 48 hours.

Personally, I think the Spireites are actually playing well but in a different way.

They have definitely got more gears to go up but the saying ‘attacks win you games, defences win you titles’ comes to mind.

POACHER

Tshimanga’s second goal from a couple of yards out was a proper poacher’s finish and one I am not sure they would have scored last season. Kabby’s found the net three times now and he is the joint top scorer in the league. Looks like money well spent so far.
