Assistant boss pleased Chesterfield didn't succumb to seeds of doubt

Assistant manager Danny Webb embraced an improvement but said there is still work to be done after the home draw with Gillingham.

The front-footed first-half showing that earned a 1-0 lead from a rare goal from Josh Koroma was wiped out by the visitors’ equaliser.

There was some tension in the home ranks before Chesterfield regained their composure and finished the match on the attack rather than on a downer like in the late loss at Rotherham a few days before.

"It was an occasion at Rotherham on Saturday and it wasn’t a wonderful performance,” Webb told the Derbyshire Times.

"We didn’t play well because players sometimes play a little bit below what they can do. Some played well, some not so, some will be disappointed with themselves and some pleased.

"What was great this time is that, especially first half, everyone was at it.

"It was great for Josh to get off the mark because he had a bit of a tough time on Saturday. It would have been nice for him to go home having scored the winning goal and got the three points.

“When Gillingham did equalise, from a mistake unfortunately, you’re just hoping we don’t got too gung-ho and leave ourselves open to another sickener like we did at Rotherham.

"We managed that quite well and I am encouraged we kept trying to do the right things.”

While the draw left Chesterfield with only four points from their opening four matches, it was a step an upgrade in terms of how they went about their business.

Heeding calls to play forward more, the players moved the ball quicker. They mixed it up and it was a long ball down the right channel that eventually resulted in Koroma’s goal.

“The positive is we didn’t go on to lose the game after it went 1-1,” added Webb. "It will never be our mantra but when it’s happened to you a few days earlier there’s a little seed in your head. You have to make sure that seed doesn’t grow. Three points would have been great but one point is certainly better than none.

"It was an improvement from Saturday, let’s get that clear, but there is still work to be done.”

The draw was one of seven on the night in League Two.

Barnet, who are this weekend’s visitors to the SMH, were held 1-1 by Exeter.

They will arrive unbeaten in second spot behind Bristol Rovers while Chesterfield sit 16th in the early league table.
