Ashley Whitt bagged a late winner for South Normanton Athletic on the road at Arnold Town.

The Shiners were headed towards three points thanks to Daniel Riley’s opener on 23 minutes before Simon Hore equalised for Arnold ten minutes from time.

But Whitt struck the decisive blow when he flicked the ball high over the home side’s goalkeeper and in to the unguarded net to spark wild celebrations.

The ground was bone hard, the wind swirling and Arnold didn’t give their opponents a second on the ball in what was largely a scrappy first half.

The only notable piece of football played led to the breakthrough when Sam Keenan, Luke Crosby and Jamie Pawley combined to play in Riley who took a touch before smashing a shot in for 1-0.

Crosby limped off with a suspected hamstring injury, which will put him in doubt for Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final, and was replaced by Ant Fay.

Hore headed home to level the scores on 80 minutes from a Tain Walton corner but the game belonged to Whitt’s strike that was worthy of winning any game.

South Normanton travel to Radford FC’s ground to take on Ellistown & Ibstock United FC in the League Cup semi-final on Tuesday, April 14 (7.45pm kick off).

SNAFC: Ste Smith, Dave Leigh, Sam Keenan, Danny Roberts c, Kane Jellyman, Frazer Kirk, Kyle Johnson, Dan Riley, Ash Whitt, Luke Crosby (Ant Fay 25), Jamie Pawley.
