Chesterfield have still got a play-off match away at Halifax to look forward to next week but no doubt manager Paul Cook will be compiling a list of players who he wants to bring in no matter what league the Spireites are in.
Here are 12 free agents who have been let go by League Two clubs. Some are more realistic than others, some are older than others, some have played for Town before, dive in and let us know what you think...
5. Bruno Andrade
The attacking midfielder/forward has been let go by Stevenage after scoring two goals in 31 appearances last season. The 28-year-old has experience of the National League with Woking and Boreham Wood, at the latter he scored 19 goals as they reached the play-off final, a match he scored in. The Portugese then signed for Lincoln City where he bagged 10 goals in 42 appearances as the Imps were crowned League Two champions. He then joined Salford City in January 2020. Photo: Lewis Storey
6. Charlie Carter
The attacking midfielder joined Stevenage from Chesterfield for a fee in July 2019 but they have now decided to release him. He has had his injuries but he is still only 25. Photo: David Rogers
7. Callum McManaman
The 31-year-old winger is another who has been released by Tranmere Rovers after making 33 appearances last season. His former clubs include Wigan Athletic, where he won the FA Cup, and West Brom and Sunderland. Photo: Pete Norton
8. Caolan Lavery
Like O'Donnell, Lavery is another player who has been released by Bradford City and had a short loan at the Spireites in 2015. He only scored one goal last season but at the age of 29 he could still have something to offer. Photo: Pete Norton
