Thousands of people have posted photographs on Twitter, using the hashtags #putoutyourbats and #putyourbatout.
Joe, aged 23, who attended Dore’s King Ecgbert School, joined his England team-mates in lining up their bats outside their dressing room in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the team are currently on tour.
Michael, now a TV cricket pundit, said on Twitter: “I just cannot believe it.
“Just far too young. He was only doing the job he loved, and was brilliant at it.”
Other stars to get involved include Shane Warne and Piers Morgan.
