Holmewood’s new campaign got off to a sticky start on Saturday when they lost to a strong Spondon 2nd side by 86 runs in Division Three of the Derbyshire County League.

They started promisingly with the ball, reducing their opponents to 19-3 in the first 13 overs. However, they were unable to sustain this early pressure as Paul Edwards and Andy Brear (62) put on 154 for the fourth wicket and helped to steer Spondon to a total of 200-7.

Edwards looked certain to record a fine opening-day hundred for the home side, but a downpour forced the teams off just before tea and his captain declared two overs early, leaving the left-hander stranded on 93 not out.

Although Jamie Horton recorded figures of 4-32, the hosts’ score was well above par on a heavy outfield, and proved too much for Holmewood, for whom several batsmen got going but none was able to kick on.

Spondon’s spinners extracted significant turn from the slow surface and took regular wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 114 in 45 overs.

Holmewood 2nd fared far better in Division Eight, posting a winning draw against Alfreton 3rd. Danny Oldale smashed 80 of Holmewood’s 136 before the home side restricted Alfreton to just 44-5.
