Falcons suffer narrow defeat to Lightning

Derbyshire Falcons captain Billy Godleman admitted he was disappointed his side suffered a four run defeat to Lancashire Lightning on Monday.

“It was very close, and we’ve just said in the dressing rooms that we’re disappointed not to have chased that down," he said.

“There were a couple of positions we found ourselves in from 10 overs out."

However, Godleman did look to the positives from the contest.

“As a collective group, a young inexperienced attack and in the field, I thought guys bowling the trump overs at the start and the death were phenomenal," he added.

“180 was par. We would definitely have taken that at the start. It’s just so disappointing to have got so close and come away losing."

A fine innings of 82 by Alex Davies helped steer Lancashire to a tense four–run victory over Derbyshire at Headingley to give the Emirates Old Trafford side their second win in three North Group games and consign the Falcons to their second loss in three.

Replying to Lancashire’s 178 for five, the Falcons managed 174-7, although a late onslaught by Matt Critchley, who was run out off the penultimate ball of the innings for 32, kept the outcome in doubt until the final delivery of the 20th over.

Davies and Steven Croft (38) did the majority of the damage for Lancashire, while Ed Barnes was the pick of the Falcons bowlers, taking two wickets for the loss of 27 runs

Wayne Madsen (44), top scored for Derbyshire with support coming from Luis Reece (39), Matthew Critchley (32), Leus du Plooy (29) and Alex Hughes (10).

Lancashire captain Dane Vilas reflected upon the result : “Nineteen off the last over is a good position to be in, but it doesn’t help when the first ball goes out the park for six.

“But credit to Tom (Bailey), he held his nerve and got us over the line, which is the most important thing.

“The way Al Davies was going - he batted incredibly well again - we were thinking 200. But I was happy with 180. I thought that was a good score.

“But we made a few mistakes in the field and didn’t bowl our best if we’re honest with ourselves."
