The Grassroots Series consists of 36 qualifiers split into two distance categories -- sprint and middle distance -- to be run throughout the season at courses managed by The Jockey Club.

And the series will culminate in two £25,000 finals to be staged at Nottingham Racecourse on Wednesday 1st October.

“This is a real feather in the cap for the city’s racecourse,” said Pip Kirkby, the general manager at Nottingham.

“We are delighted to have been chosen to host the finals. With £50,000 on offer, I hope the two races prove popular for owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff, and support those investing most in British racing.”

The Grassroots Series is part of The Jockey Club’s commitment to provide opportunities for horses operating below the highest level to compete for considerable prize-money.

Colwick Park is one of 15 courses run by The Jockey Club, which is the largest commercial group in British racing and invests every penny it makes back into the sport.

The course is riding the crest of a wave at present. Despite indifferent weather, it attracted a bumper crowd last Saturday for one of its biggest meetings of the year, Ladies’ Day, which featured a £40,000 Listed sprint for fillies, won by the five-year-old Caledonia Lady.

The day also launched the Grassroots Series, with the first two races -- handicaps over five furlongs and ten furlongs.
