In-from Chesterfield HC put in a five star display

Chesterfield continued their impressive form with a well-earned 5-1 victory on Saturday against visitors Leicester.

The North Derbyshire side have now won their last four league encounters, scoring an impressive 17 goals whilst conceding just two.

Keen to avenge the disappointment of the result in the reverse fixture the hosts were able to pick a strong squad which saw Ben Curley return to first team action for the first time since March.

Chesterfield started with a real sense of purpose, pressing high up the field, and the visitors found it difficult to retain possession with Christian Battye and Jonathon Hodgson impressing.

Another of the Hodgson boys, Andy, was also instrumental in linking the phases of play together. Indeed, great work in the midfield brought about the first opportunity which Billy Fouflias put wide.

The deadlock was broken from the first penalty corner of the game. A Jon Moores flick, intended for the deflection, inadvertently found its way into the corner giving the hosts the lead they deserved.

With tails up, Chesterfield were relentless in their quest to kill the game off before half time. Comfortable in possession, the hosts carved open the visitors on regular occasions. Adam Bointon netted two goals in quick succession from close range, whilst Chris Cowley bagged a goal from similar range for his fifth of the season to put Chesterfield 4-0 up.Half time came and went with the hosts looking for more of the same. Quickly back into their stride the home side continued to play on the front foot - dominating possession and looking threatening in attack.

After chasing shadows for much of the game the visitors began to tire. Chesterfield created several good opportunities to further their lead but David Standish in the Leicester goal produced an inspired display.

It wasn’t until late in the game when a penalty corner strike from Moores squeezed under the goalkeeper that the home side go their fifth. Leicester were able to grab a consolation goal through Marina De La Lastra.

After the game, player-coach Ben Lamb, who played no part in the 70 minutes, was pleased with the performance: “The guys were superb, we set out with a plan to win the match in the first half by playing a high pressing game.

“The players executed it perfectly and were very professional in their approach. I know Leicester will be disappointed as they beat us earlier in the season but we didn’t do ourselves justice at their place. It was great for me to watch from the sidelines, something I may do more often.”
