Tiger Woods has undergone major surgery on his right leg and ankle after a serious car crash in Los Angeles.

Woods was driving a Genesis GV80 when he crashed - a vehicle from the luxury brand of South Korea’s Hyundai Motors.

A deputy from the LA County Sheriff's Department said Woods was “fortunate to be alive” after the serious crash.
Police rushed to the scene on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes at 07:12 local time.
The 15-time major champion had to be “extricated from the wreck” by firefighters and paramedics who opened the car’s windshield to get him out.

Hide AdDeputy Carlos Gonzalez said Woods was "not able to stand under his own power" before being removed from the Genesis GV80, which “sustained major damage”.
The American golfer was wearing his seatbelt and was "still calm and lucid" when authorities arrived, Gonzalez said.
Woods was quickly transported to a local hospital by ambulance to treat his injuries.

Hide AdThe golf legend was travelling at a “relatively greater speed than normal” when he descended down a hill which is notorious for a “high frequency of accidents”, according to Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
Police assumed that the car had hit the barrier that separated the carriageways, before colliding with a kerb and a tree and rolling over several times.
No other vehicle was believed to be involved in the accident, the Sheriff’s department said.

Hide AdAccording to local media reports, Woods is also thought to have been alone in the car when it crashed.
Overhead pictures of the car showed serious damage as it lay on its side on a grass embankment near the road.

The Sheriff's statement read: "On February 23, 2021, at approximately 7:12 AM, LASD responded to a single vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes.

Hide Ad“The vehicle was travelling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Blackhorse Road, when it crashed. The vehicle sustained major damage.
"The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods. Mr. Woods was extricated from the wreck by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries."
Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, said earlier: "Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support."

at the time of the accident, according to the LA County Sheriff.

Hide AdHe underwent a “long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle after being brought to the hospital”, his team said in a statement.
The golfer is now "awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room", a statement on Woods’ Twitter page said.
In the statement posted to his followers, Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer and interim CEO of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said: "Open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the right tibia and fibula bones were stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia.

Hide Ad“Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilised with a combination of screws and pins.
"Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."
Woods is currently recovering in the hospital.
