The Bluth family are returning to the small screen for a fifth season - and judging by the first trailer Mitchell Hurwitz looks to be atoning for the divisive fourth season.

The full series of Arrested Development will be released on 29 May and will be available on Netflix.

As well as a release date, Netflix have dropped a trailer for the new season featuring series regulars Jason Bateman, Michael Cera and Jessica Walter.

Getting political

The trailer features Lindsay Bluth, proclaiming that she is running for Congress: 'I want to be part of the problem, Michael.'

And its not only Portia de Rossi's character who's going for glory - the Bluth family are running for family of the year (sponsored by the Austero Bluth Company).

Fans can take a sneak peek at the Bluth's campaign ahead of the season five release at votebluth.com which features a campaign kit, a rundown of their campaign trail, as well as the option to sign up for a newsletter.

The ever-modest and completely dysfunctional family claim:"We're not just the Family of the Year in the O.C. We're the Family of the Year and we're coming to a city near you. Or far from you. It depends on how major that city is, really."

Making up for season four

Season four was divisive to say the least.

Due to difficulties with scheduling, the Bluth family were kept apart and scattered over several episodes set in the same time period. The departure from the show's tried and tested format left a large portion of the fanbase bewildered.

Last week a re-cut version of season four which played out events in chronological order was released on Netflix, while the original cut was removed from the streaming platform altogether.

The trailer suggests that fans can expect a return to (relative) normality in season five, with the majority of the cast reunited.

That includes George Bluth, played by Jeffrey Tambor, who was sacked from Amazon's Transparent last year under a cloud of harassment allegations, which he denies.

“In making and promoting seasons four and five of Arrested Development, Jeffrey has always been totally professional,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said yesterday.

Whether fans can stomach a chaotic and political drama, given the omnipresence of ludicrous events on news channels, however, remains to be seen
