World-class athletes backDales effort

Two world-class athletes paid a visit to the Dales this week to kick-start a Wirksworth woman’s mountainous charity challenge.

Olympian Adam Whitehead and Paralympic skier Anna Turner helped launch Karen Mackay’s Kilimanjaro Challenge to raise a whopping £30,000 for the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

Karen kicked off her fundraising journey on Monday, May 20, by completing a warm up 10-mile walk starting at White Lodge on the outskirts of Bakewell.

Karen said: “Inspired by such an incredible woman and a worthy cause I have decided to don my boots once more and strike a considerable challenge off my list.

“I would love to raise as much money as possible for a cause that is making such a difference to children.”

Dame Kelly Holmes praised Karen’s determination adding that she was “delighted” that she had decided to raise money for her cause – which helps young people get their lives back on track through sport.

Cllr Mike Ratcliffe, Mayor of Wirksworth, said: “I’m really pleased to see this initiative going forward and we give full support to Karen and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.”
