Tarmac is asking Derbyshire County Council for permission to extract an additional 4.8million tonnes of limestone in four areas on the edge of the current site and also to extend the life of the whole quarry operation to 2040.

The Southfield Lane site has a range of mineral-related businesses which support a total of more than 220 jobs and inject more than £6m-a-year into the local economy.

Last June Tarmac consulted residents in parishes around the quarry and since then has been considering the feedback in finalising its plans.

It is currently sending a summary of its proposals to parish councillors and also distributing a newsletter to more than 1,500 homes in the area.

David Atkinson, estates manager for the company, said: “The quarry liaison committee was keen for us to continue to consult residents on the progress of the application and we want to make as many people as possible aware of the plans and how they can give feedback if they want to.”

Copies of a summary of the application are available at Whitwell and Creswell libraries.
