Whittington police keep youngsters safe

Police in Whittington have met with pupils about to start at a local secondary school to introduce themselves and talk about road safety.

PCSO Sheila Rooksby and PCSO Gareth Turner of the area’s local Safer Neighbourhood policing team called in to see the soon-to-be Year seven students at Whittington Green School, who will be starting in September.

PCSO Sheila Rooksby said: “It was a great opportunity to say hello to those local young people who are about to start their secondary school careers at Whittington Green School.

“We spoke to them about road safety issues and have organised two teams of around 16 pupils who will be helping us to raise awareness of speeding over the next year by being part of a Community Speed Watch initiative.”

It was part of a week of activities organised by the school during the holidays to help new pupils get to know the school, staff and other youngsters.

During the new school year the students will be working with the Whittington and Barrow Hill Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team to raise awareness of speeding and road safety near to the school.

PCSO Rooksby added: “The project is still in its early days but I am looking forward to getting to know these young volunteers over the next few months and working with them to hopefully help improve an issue which affects not just the school but the wider community too.”
