Plea issued after campfire discovered in the ‘heart of the Peak District’ during heatwave – just weeks after major blaze

A plea has been issued to residents and visitors after a campfire was discovered in the ‘heart of the Peak District’ during the current heatwave – just weeks after a major blaze that ripped through nearby moorland.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) has urged people to behave responsibly after discovering a campfire at Bamford yesterday (Monday, May 25) – just 10 miles from the scene of a recent wildfire that tore through a large area of Peak District moorland.

A DFRS spokesperson said: “The hottest bank holiday weekend recorded and with all our pleas, and those of fire services up and down the country, people are still lighting camp fires.

“This campfire was found by Hathersage firefighters near Bamford. The campfire was approximately 10 miles from the recent wildfire at Snake Pass. This location is surrounded by vegetation and in the heart of the tourist area of the Peak District.

“Wildfires can spread quickly and in the blink of an eye when it’s so hot. Responding to large wildfires tie our resources up, meaning it could take us longer to respond to a life-risk fire elsewhere

“Help us prevent that and stop taking such risks. Please follow our warning - we are running out of ways to ask nicely.”
