14-week-old puppy left inside car in Peak District for 'well over an hour' in 30 degree heat

A 14-week-old puppy was left inside a car in the Peak District for “well over an hour" on Tuesday as temperatures soared.

Passers-by and staff at a nearby cafe alerted police to the incident in Castleton after hearing “the whispers of the puppy before it was too late”. It had been left in the back of a black vehicle.

Police immediately smashed the rear window to retrieve the puppy, who they said was “very lucky” to escape alive.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson criticised the owner.

They said: “We would think in this day and age leaving a dog, or any living thing in fact, inside a car on a hot 30-degree day would be a no-brainer. However, some still do. This was a costly lesson for the owner and hopefully one that will never happen again for this puppy!

“A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn't feel that warm.”
