Thankfully, though, it was a staged incident as part of the Dying2Drive campaign, which raises awareness about the horrific consequences of driving while distracted by devices such as mobile phones.

The event involved a fake collision involving two vehicles with volunteer students trapped inside.

Firefighters carried out an emergency rescue to illustrate how distressing crashes can be.

Billie Underwood, learning manager at Outwood Academy, said: “This is a continuation of work we have been doing with partenrs to develop, we hope, safer young drivers.”
