And Paul Ballington really did get on his bike for a hilarious music video, filmed by The Star, for his song Get On Yer Bike.

He’s ditched his England kit and gone all French - complete with beret, curly moustache, striped shirt, neckerchief, loaf, onions, wine and dodgy accent.

The 36-year-old father-of-two, is seen cycling to The Star office wobbling down York Street on a bike with a broken chain, while holding up his prized guitar.

Paul wanted to mark the Grand Depart with a fun song. So the plumber swapped his plunger for a plectrum to pen Get On Yer Bike

And he’s hoping it’s going to rival the official Yorkshire Tour de France anthem, The Road, featuring singer-songwriter Alistair Griffin and Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud.

Paul’s effort couldn’t be more of a contrast.

Paul’s World Cup song, England in Brazil, was written before the squad was picked and named Ashley Cole and Andros Townsend - who were not selected. That helped the song go viral, along with retweets by ex- international Carlton Palmer and radio plays.

It didn’t top the charts. But he’s hoping for grand things from his Tour de France song.

“I couldn’t resist a Tour de France song, what with the Grand Depart coming through Yorkshire,” said Paul, of Throapham, near Dinnington,

“My family and friends think I’m a bit crackers but it’s about having fun. I’m not even a cycling fan and I don’t have a bike of my own. But with all this talk about the Tour de France I can’t wait to see it.

“And I’m hoping my song will also get people in the mood and yes, perhaps even get on their bikes.”

The former Dinnington Comprehensive pupil, who produced the song at Bigdog Studios in Sheffield, littered it with Yorkshire dialogue.

“It only took half a day to write but I’m really proud of it. And I want to thank The Star for filming the video - with a bit of luck, this might go viral.

“There is an official Tour song but it’s a pop song - I hope people like the fun side of my tune.

“If it goes down well there’s still time to do a Wimbeldon song. I could end up with an album full of fun sports songs.

“I’m hoping it brings our Tour de France riders more luck than my England In Brazil did for our footballers.”

Paul previously recorded a Christmas song for PACT – the Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia – which raised money to take children from Sheffield Children’s Hospital to Sundown Adventure Land for the day.

He has already put his Get On Yer Bike song on iTunes in a bid to get it to number one. The official song is available on iTunes and Amazon from June 30.

GET ON YER BIKE LYRICS BY PAUL BALLINGTON

Us Yorkshire folk are proud as punch

‘Cos on the 5th of July

A load of blokes with their push irons

Will be cycling for the right

To be crowned the winner of the Tour de France

As they pedal at crazy speeds

And every rider stands a chance

And their setting off in Leeds

Yorkshire hosts the Grand Depart

Na then, that’s reight good

Let’s hope the boys make a good start

If they don’t, then ey by gum

You can’t help but be amazed

By Yorkshire’s countryside

And ut’s not a bad thing ‘cos you’re pedalling for days

At the end you’ll be ready for a pie

Tour de FRance

Get on ya bike

As you glide across the Pennines

You can’t help but feel all right

Winding through the Yorkshire Dales

Let’s hope the weather’s fine

Get on ya bike

Get on ya bike

Us Yorkshire folk are honoured so good luck to every man

As you pedal like a child chasing down the ice cream van

Every rider get out there - get on your bike

The Grand Depart of Tour de France

Is an unforgettable sight

Then they’ll head off down to London

Much to our Queen’s delight

They’ll be closing down one or two roads

So you may as well watch we a beer

And when you see that marshall don’t have a moan

When he sez ‘tha can’t gu darn thea’

So as the boys pull on their cycling shows

And their padded Lycra shorts

They may have to squeeze into

The things we do for sports

The 101st Tour de FRance

It will begin in style

‘Cos Yorkshire folk when given the chance

Will cheer you for every mile

So riders are you ready, are you steady

Are you ready to go?

As we watch the Grand Depart

Can you maker a good start

We hope so
