VIDEO: Dog fouling advice has not changed, say council

Chesterfield Borough Council has told dog owners they must continue to clean up after their pets.

The council has been contacted by residents who have seen a message from the Forestry Commission which states that dog owners should pick their dog’s mess up with a stick and flick it into the undergrowth.

This is, though, only recommended in open countryside.

Residents are reminded to continue to pick up and bag dog waste.

The council’s enforcement officers will issue fixed penalty notices to people who allow their dog to foul and fail to pick up after them in open spaces such as footpaths, verges, roads, parks, playing fields or any other public space.

Councillor Chris Ludlow, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We are reminding residents that it is essential to pick up after their dogs.

“We receive hundreds of complaints each year about dog fouling and we carry out regular patrols to catch those people who continue to allow their dogs to foul in public places.

“We regularly issue fixed penalty notices and we will take persistent offenders to court, where the maximum fine is £1,000.”

There are around 450 dog waste bins across the borough for people to dispose of their dog’s mess. If there is no dog bin available, it can be put in another bin, taken home to be put, well wrapped, into the dustbin or solid waste can be flushed down the toilet.
