Army bomb disposal experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a live World War Two bomb found in Chesterfield this afternoon.

The discovery was made about 2.10pm by someone using a metal detector in a big field off Cambrian Close, Newbold.

A police spokesman said: “We had a call to say someone had found what appeared to be a shell of some description.

“An army bomb squad was called out to check the shell as a precaution.

“There are no properties nearby and it has not been necessary to impose any road closures.

“The incident is not believed to pose any danger to the public.”

The bomb was identified as a 1KG German incendiary device, and the controlled explosion was carried out shortly after 5pm.
