Detectives investigating an alleged attempted murder are urging residents in Alfreton and Somercotes to check their wheelie bins before they are emptied on Thursday and Friday.

A 68-year-old woman told police that a man allegedly approached her as she was walking in Grange Street at about 6pm on Friday and demanded her handbag.

She said that when she refused to hand it over, the alleged robber punched her several times and took her bag.

Officers believe the bag may have been discarded and are asking people to check their bins.

The woman suffered facial injuries, including several puncture wounds to her face and neck.

She was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment and has since been discharged.

Lee Greenall, 39, of Castle Drive, Somercotes, has been charged with attempted murder, robbery and possessing an offensive weapon. He is due to appear at Chesterfield magistrates’ court on Thursday.

Anyone who witnessed anything that evening, or anyone who has discovered a discarded handbag or purse, should call police on 101, quoting incident 538 of February 5.
