Urgent plea as two mums need homes after their 18 pups found happy ending

Two female dogs who gave birth to a total of 18 puppies at the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch are now looking for their forever homes after all their offspring have been adopted or reserved by new owners.

Five-year-old Cane Corso Kila arrived at the Chesterfield Branch on 1 July after being rescued from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, by RSPCA officers due to concerns for her welfare. The team at the branch had no idea she was pregnant until she went to get neutered at the vets.

Kila gave birth to a huge litter of 14 puppies in August; the highest number the centre has ever seen. Heartbreakingly two were still born, and a hand-rear called Billie sadly passed away but pups Cedric, Clark, Cornelius, Guinness, Jones, Lorenzo, Lucille, Marion, Roderick, and Sarah, plus the hand-rear pup Winnie all came on leaps and bounds and have since been adopted or reserved.

Four-year-old Susie was rescued after police requested support from the RSPCA with 15 dogs living at a property in Barnsley, in South Yorkshire. She arrived at Chesterfield on 25 July, giving birth to 10 puppies just three days later, on 28 July. Sadly, three passed away in the first few days, despite the very best efforts of the staff.

But the rest of the spaniel-type puppies - Ashara, Enam, Fyra, Iki, Otto, San and Una - have now all been rehomed.

Chloe Gee, from the branch in Spital Lane, said: “By the time we found out Kila was pregnant, we’d already taken Susie in, knowing that she was expecting. When we discovered we would be having two litters we were rather surprised; especially as they were due just a few days apart.

“It was certainly a busy time at the centre helping both the mums and all their pups - but we are so pleased with how they grew into loveable little characters who have all now been adopted or reserved.

“Now we want to find homes for their mums who have been fantastic at bringing up their pups and now deserve their own family where they can enjoy living their best life.”

Kila is a large and loving gentle giant who loves lots of fuss and attention and is also a bit of a couch potato. She enjoys food and treats, going for walks and meeting new people and may be able to live with another dog. She knows a number of commands and could live with children of primary school age and is able to be left for short periods.

Susie, a lurcher-type, also loves fuss and attention and is really friendly but would need someone with her most of the time. She loves walking and treats and could live with another clam dog and children of all ages

Meanwhile Coco, a 12-year-old Boxer cross- is also in need of a home after being the longest dog resident currently at the branch - after spending more than 300 days patiently waiting for her forever home.

Chloe said Coco has so much affection to share with the right family and a true companion who thrives on closeness and connection.

She also described her as a “gentle giant, broad, strong, yet as soft-hearted as they come”.

Coco loves her food and treats, relaxes into snoozes on the sofa, and enjoys being near her people, the perfect mix of laid-back company and affectionate friend.

Coco would be happiest as the only dog in the home, with someone experienced who understands her calm personality and can offer her consistent, loving attention. She’d also do best in a home with adults only, where she can be cherished every day.

Chloe said: “If you think you could offer Susie, Kila or or one of the other lovely animals in our care, please get in touch with us and a member of the team will help you find your perfect match.

“Rescuing a dog is such a rewarding experience, and they’re sure to bring such love and fun to your home.”
